The Story Behind Winsome Orchids
On October 28, 2003, the orchid greenhouse located in Independence,
Minnesota was acquired.. Previously, orchids have been wholesaled from this location by
Castle Rock Orchids.
The new business was named
Winsome Orchids, Inc.
because the word winsome means:
“to bring joy or pleasure” which is exactly what beautiful orchids do.
As an orchid grower, retailer and wholesaler, Winsome Orchids is committed to
providing a consistent supply of superior quality orchids that will “delight our customers”.
Jim has loved and grown orchids for the past 28 years. His love for orchids led to growing and breeding premium Phalaenopsis and Cattleyas, which he sold to other orchid collectors. He is passionate about the opportunity to share his expertise with the orchid world by providing Orchid Care Seminars in addition to the wide range of orchid varieties available through Winsome Orchids.
The next step for Winsome Orchids was to expand to Winsome Orchids and Gardens in 2004 with the acquisition of a Hosta and Perennial business. Featuring about 250 varieties of Hosta, and several hundred varieties of sun and shade perennials, the spring garden center was created. Along with this, there was a demand for our Minnesota Native Ladyslipper Orchids, and Jim arranged to obtain a crop that could be legally sold from a laboratory in Canada. Along with this lab, Winsome has sourced Rescued Native Ladyslippers when they have been available.
Next, in 2006, came the Ponds and Waterfalls. After attending a Pond Building seminar, Jim realized the potential for Watergardens with Winsome Orchids and Gardens. Today, we have two ponds with waterfalls and streams, along with a Pondless Waterfall on the property to display some of the capabilities of the pond crew at Winsome. We offer complete custom design and installation capabilities to create your dream watergarden, including the aquatic plants and colorful Koi.
Then in 2007, Winsome was fortunate to have Martin Dahl, Floral Designer and Consultant, join the full-time employ of Winsome Orchids and Gardens. Martin works with many of our floral shops to understand our product offering, as well as participating with Minnesota and surrounding state floral associations for the education and promotion of using potted and cut orchids. Martin also leads the Winsome crew with designing and delivering fabulous wedding and event floral arrangements. He brings his knowledge and artistic talent together to provide unique floral creations whether for a wedding, birth, celebration, for funeral memorial.
Now 2008 has already seen changes with introductions of our Orchids To Go TM with orchids in clear Eco-Houses. We are also direct importing from Taiwan, Thailand, Ecuador, and working with growers in Hawaii to bring the latest crosses at the best possible prices. Winsome is also one of the first nurseries in the country to receive the new Little Ladies TM miniature Phalaenopsis orchids from Taiwan. These orchids are blooming size in just a 1 3/4" pot and produce 1-2 bloom spikes with 1" flowers. These are great for desks and small areas around the home. These Little Ladies TM were introduced in Europe and were named new horticulture plant of the year.
We are excited with all the changes and expanded business opportunities at Winsome Orchids and Gardens. And with all these changes, our mantra is still to provide high-quality product with superb customer service.
